What is a Retrofit Assessment?

A Retrofit Assessment is like a check-up for your home. It helps us understand how well your property holds in heat during the winter and stays cool in the summer.

One of our friendly, professional assessors will visit your home to carry out a visual inspection and gather key information about your home's energy performance.

This is the first step in identifying improvements that could make your home warmer, more comfortable, and potentially help reduce your energy bills.

You may also receive additional surveys from other companies — for example, a window installer may visit separately if new windows are being considered as part of your home’s improvement plan.

Why is a Retrofit Assessment Important?

A Retrofit Assessment helps us understand how your home is performing and where improvements can be made. Here’s why it matters:

  • Save on Energy Bills
We look for areas where energy might be wasted — helping you use less energy and potentially lower your bills.

  • Feel More Comfortable
Upgrades like better insulation or heating can make your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

  • Help the Environment
Using less energy means your home will produce fewer carbon emissions, which is better for the planet.

  • Improve Your Health
  • A well-insulated and properly ventilated home can help reduce damp and mould, improving air quality and overall health.

  • Supports Future Improvements
The assessment also gives your landlord or housing provider a clear picture of what your home already has — and what it might still need — so they can plan the next steps for improvements.

What to Expect During the Assessment

Taking part in a Retrofit Assessment is a simple, one-time visit that helps improve the comfort and energy efficiency of your home — and it won’t require much from you at all. Here’s what happens:

  • Booking an Appointment
We’ll contact you to arrange a convenient time for our assessor to visit — we’ll work around your schedule as best we can.

  • Quick Home Visit
One of our trained, friendly assessors will visit your home to draw a floorplan collect important information about things like insulation, heating, windows, and doors.
They may also ask a few simple questions about how you use energy at home.
  • You won’t need to move anything or make any preparations — we work around you.

  • Outside Wall Check
In some cases, the assessor may need to drill a tiny, pencil-sized hole in the outside wall to insert a small camera and check for insulation. This is quick, clean, and doesn’t cause damage.

  • Loft Check (If You Have One)
If your home has a loft, we’ll carry out a head-and-shoulders inspection. There’s no need to clear anything out — we won’t need to go inside the loft fully.

  • What Happens After
After the visit, we’ll use the information gathered to create a detailed report on your home’s current energy efficiency.

This report will go to your landlord or housing provider and our Retrofit Coordinators, who will use it to plan possible improvements based on what your home needs and what’s possible within the scheme.

Key Points to Remember

How Long Will It Take?

We know your time is valuable, so here’s what to expect:

  • Time Commitment
The assessment usually takes up to 2 hours, though it may be a little longer for larger or more complex homes.
  • Don’t worry — we’ll do our best to keep things smooth and efficient.

  • Arrival Window
Our booking team will give you a timeframe (e.g. between 9am–12pm) rather than an exact appointment time.
  • This is because each property is different, and the one before yours might take a bit longer than expected.

We’ll always try to get to you as early as possible within the agreed window and will let you know when the assessor is on their way.

  • Every Home Is Different
Even if homes look similar from the outside, they can be very different inside. That’s why these assessments are so important — they give us a clear picture of your individual home and what it needs.

FAQs

Q: How long does the assessment take?
A: Typically, a home visit takes about 1-2 hours, depending on the size of your property.

Q: Do I need to prepare anything before the assessor arrives?
A: There's no need to prepare anything special. Our assessor will guide you through the process and work around you and your home.

Q: Will the assessment cost me anything?
A: The assessment is funded by your local authority or housing association, who have requested we survey on their behalf, so there’s no cost to you.

Q: What kind of improvements might be recommended?
A: Recommendations can include better insulation, more efficient heating systems, draught-proofing, and upgraded windows or doors. The retrofit assessment details are intended for a retrofit coordinator to develop short-, medium-, and long-term designs and plans for you home and not for the general public. If you have any questions about your property afterwards, ask your landlord what they plan.

Q: Is it safe to let an assessor into my home?
A: Yes, all our assessors are fully trained, carry identification, and follow strict industry and health and safety guidelines. If you are unsure, we advise you check with your landlord who are aware of our activity and can confirm it is genuine.

You can request a unique password or phrase for our assessor to confirm upon arrival, so you know it's the right company. Please speak to our booking team for assistance with this.
